So naturally I procrastinated writing this up till the last minute for Halloween, but I wanted to share a few games I recommend for spooky vibes! Mostly they are indie and focused on narrative over gameplay elements, which makes them cozy for me. I can enjoy the scares without focusing on combat or speed.
Scarlet Hollow
An Appalachian folk horror RPG-visual novel with nearly unheard of level of narrative branching and agency. It's technically in early access but already incredible enough to recommend.
The Shadow Over Cyberspace
An existential cosmic horror game by one of my favorite visual novel writers. Incredibly timely and thought-provoking - also free!
Lily's World XD
A found-laptop style of narrative puzzle game where you're investigating a missing teenager. Be sure to check trigger warnings.
1000xResist
A dark sci-fi narrative that defies genre and standard storytelling. It's not exactly spooky but absolutely haunting. Unlike anything else out there.
Dead Take
Fist-person horror exploration game that examines the darkest possibilities of Hollywood, featuring incredible performances from big name voice actors.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
A classic vampire RPG that probably needs no introduction. Try playing as a Malkavian for an extra trippy time.
Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker
An FMV murder mystery game where you're put into the shoes of a psychiatrist trying to solve the demise of your late predecessor. Brilliant acting from the cast.
Nancy Drew: Ghost of Thornton Hall
The Nancy Drew games are a comfort series of mine, and this one is for me the spookiest. You're solving a mystery on the grounds of a largely abandoned estate with secrets to uncover.
